Nurses and Doulas: Working Together for Safer, More Supportive Birth Experiences
Labor and birth are deeply personal experiences that require both skilled clinical care and compassionate emotional support. One of the most effective ways to promote safe, positive birth outcomes is through collaboration between nurses and doulas during the labor process.
Labor and delivery nurses play a critical role in monitoring maternal and fetal well-being, administering medications, communicating with providers, recognizing complications, and ensuring evidence-based medical care is delivered safely. Doulas complement this care by providing continuous non-medical support through comfort measures, emotional reassurance, advocacy, education, positioning, breathing techniques, and encouragement throughout labor.
When nurses and doulas work collaboratively, families often experience improved communication, reduced anxiety, and greater confidence during childbirth. This teamwork allows nurses to focus on clinical responsibilities while doulas help maintain a calm and supportive environment for the birthing individual and their support person.
Research has shown that continuous labor support from doulas may contribute to lower rates of cesarean birth, decreased use of certain interventions, shorter labors, and improved patient satisfaction. Nurses and doulas share a common goal: promoting safe, respectful, patient-centered care that supports healthy outcomes for both parent and baby.
Successful collaboration begins with mutual respect, clear communication, and understanding each professional’s role within the birth team. Together, nurses and doulas help empower birthing families while creating a safer, more positive labor experience.
At Elevation Wellness, we value collaborative care and believe every birthing family deserves compassionate support, informed advocacy, and a healthcare team committed to their well-being every step of the way.
